Welcome to Washington Mind

Washington Mind is a local independent charity offering a range of mental health and wellbeing services and training to respond to the needs of local people. We do our best to ensure that the services are provided in a way that makes people feel comfortable and accepted in a non-judgemental and supportive environment.

We are a Local Mind Association (LMA), affiliated to the national organisation but registered as an independent charity in its own right.  Washington Mind adheres to the foundation principles endorsed by National Mind.

Mind is the leading mental health charity in England and Wales and works to create a better life for everyone with experience of mental distress by:

  • Advancing the views, needs and ambitions of people with mental health problems
  • Challenging discrimination and promoting inclusion
  • Influencing policy through campaigning and education
  • Inspiring the development of quality services which reflect expressed need and diversity

Achieving equal rights through campaigning and educationSince its launch in 1946, Mind has grown into a nationwide network of supporters working through a central London office, regional resource centres and almost 200 local associations spread throughout England and Wales.

The town of Washington is situated on the geographical outskirts of Sunderland and has a quite distinct identity.  The need to provide support and services to meet the needs of Washington people was an inspiration in the formation of Washington Mind in 1981 by a member of Sunderland Mind’s Committee together with a small band of dedicated supporters.  Interest and demand for services were apparent from the outset. Washington Mind continues to work in partnership with Sunderland Mind to meet the needs of people across the City of Sunderland.  The service relocated to an independent base in Washington Village in April 2007 and delivers a range of services in community venues in Washington, the Coalfields and across Sunderland.
