Our Trustees

The work of Washington Mind is overseen by our Board of Trustees.  The trustees of the Executive Committee also work in a voluntary capacity. The Committee’s main purpose is to run the charity and ensure it is meeting its aims and objectives. We recruit volunteers with key skills and experience in areas such as mental health service users and workers, the voluntary sector, management, finance and human resources.

We would like to introduce you to them:

Bernie Cornish

Chairperson

My relationship with Washington Mind began over 10 years ago, I have enjoyed numerous roles in that period as a member of the board, treasurer and over the past few years Chair of this fantastic organisation.

In my professional career I have experience in a wide variety of roles including Operational performance, HR, Recruitment, Customer and Colleague Experience. I am also a licensed trainer and have spent a great deal of my career developing training materials and delivering training.

In my spare time my world revolves around my family and friends. I have two wonderful sons Grant and Lewis, their partners Erin and Beth and my husband Ian. We have a really tight bond and even though my sons are grown up and live independent lives we always make time for time for each other, they truly are my support network. My Brother, Sister and their families are also very important to me, we are part of a large family who work hard to remain close and support each other...

Sharon Fenwick

Trustee / Service User Involvement

Hi. My name is Sharon Fenwick.
I have been in Mental Health Services for over 20yrs as a service user in need of support for my own mental health issues. I first came to Washington Mind 14yrs ago & dipped in & out of dropin sessions as i needed.  I came back to Washington Mind in need of support around 7yrs ago. At that time i was doing my Foundation Degree In Applied Arts.

I then went on to do my art degree work placement with Washington Mind & started to facilitate the Arts & Craft sessions at Hetton Centre. This then lead to becoming a Service User/Volunteer for Washington Mind & continuing to facilitate the Hetton arts & crafts sessions & now arts & craft sessions at the life house.

This year l became a committee member & trustee as well as service user lead.  Service users can come to me if needed & also feeding back service user information at committee meetings. My passion is service user involvement & peer support.  I love & enjoy being a volunteer/trustee & im glad i can share how much arts & crafts can help people in there recovery.

I look forward to next 7yrs !!

Elaine Harbron

Trustee

I recently joined the Washington Mind Board of Trustees after attending the AGM in 2015. I am familiar with Washington Mind, as I support a family member who has mental health problems.

My previous working life has included working in retail, catering and I was a sewing machinist for many years. In 1999 I undertook an Access to Humanities course at Sunderland College and in 2000 I began studying for my degree in Psychology at Sunderland University. I volunteered at Washington Asylum Seekers Project from 2003, after I graduated. I supported service users and was part of the management committee.

Part of my current day job at Sunderland City Council involves supporting voluntary and community sector organisations with ICT and digital inclusion for hard to reach groups. I am enjoying being able to use my knowledge and experience to support the excellent work of Washington Mind.

Ruth Purvis

Trustee

I am a service user volunteer for Washington Mind. I came to the organisation some time ago to access their services for my own mental health, and the support I received was fantastic. It led me to becoming a service user volunteer in 2014 to assist in fundraising events. I then went on to help facilitate creative sessions.

Both my passion and experience lies within fundraising and events organising. I was chairperson for the Sunderland branch of (NDCS) in the 1980’s where I gained experience in fundraising.

I have experience with individuals who have sensory impairment and have knowledge in BSL to stage 2 level.

I have been an active member of St Georges church in Fatfield for over 20 years, involved in various duties, E.g: Craft sessions with children and adults and event organising.

I have recently become involved in the collection of donations to the Homeless Shelter People Kitchen and Wearside Women in Need.

I hope that with my experience, enthusiasm and positive mind I can assist the work of Washington Mind.
