One to One Work

Counselling
The term counselling covers a broad spectrum, we use the term here to mean a talking therapy delivered by a trained professional; all Washington Mind counsellors are qualified or second year Diploma students and have access to clinical counselling supervision.

Counselling provides a regular time and space for people to talk about their issues and explore difficult feelings in a confidential, dependable environment. The sessions last almost an hour, are usually weekly or fortnightly and the average number of sessions is ten.

The underlying assumption in humanistic counselling is that given support, acceptance and understanding, most people have the capacity to resolve their own emotional problems. This approach involves the therapist providing a sympathetic and non-judgmental setting in which the client can develop the confidence to address their own problems. The therapist´s main role is in listening to the client, reflecting back on what has been said and showing empathy.

Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a one to one talking therapy that could be considered as a more in depth style of counselling. It might be more helpful for psychological problems that have built up over years than at a time of crisis or distress.

Computerised Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CCBT)
In partnership with STPCT we will be offering Computerised Cognitive Behaviour Therapy sessions at Washington Mind via an interactive computer. The Beating the Blues (Ultrasis plc) is a CBT-based package for people with anxiety and/or depression. The sessions are usually at weekly intervals and homework projects are completed between sessions.

Independent Advocacy The Advocacy in Mind project provides inpatient advocacy at Cherry Knowle Hospital for people who live in North Easington (SR7/SR8). The advocate visits wards on a weekly basis or can be contacted at Washington Mind. For more info
